Go to the Start menu and open (DGIndex icon) DGIndex.

From the "File" menu, select "Open [F2]".

Navigate to the ripping folder and select all of the .VOB files at once.

Click the "Open" button, and the .VOBs will appear in the file list.

Click the "OK" button.

Go to the "Video" menu and select Field Operation --> Honor Pulldown Flags.

If you are ripping a PAL DVD, skip past the yellow sections.

If you are ripping an NTSC DVD, drag the slider to the middle of the movie and click the "[" button.

If you only want to decode a section of the video/audio, you can set the begin point with "[" and the end point with "]". You can use this functionality to cut out vendor logos and credits, or to select a snippet of the movie for test encoding.

Press F5 and watch the video for at least 30 seconds, then press Esc to stop. Were there any interlacing artifacts? They appear when there is a lot of motion on the screen:
Horizontal lines run through the picture, distorting and blurring the shape of the moving object.

If there were no artifacts, go to the "Video" menu and select
Field Operation --> Forced FILM.

If there were artifacts, make no changes. Continue below.

During playback, DGIndex displays a statistics window that shows the video type and is supposed to indicate which Field Operation mode to use. However, sometimes it can be incorrect. The method above will work just fine in the context of this guide, since later steps are designed around it. Other guides may be different.

Click now for more on interlacing.

Drag the slider back to the very beginning, and click the "[" button.

From the "Video" menu, select iDCT Algorithm --> 64-bit Floating Point

Would you like to know more?iDCT Algorithm
iDCT stands for Inverse Discrete Cosine Transform. It is a mathematical formula used in DVD decoding. The 64-bit FP iDCT decoding method is more precise, producing output closest to the IEEE-1180 Reference iDCT.

From the "Audio" menu, select Output Method --> Demux All Tracks

When you are ready to decode, go to the "File" menu and select "Save Project [F4]".

Name the file decoded.d2v, and save it in the ripping folder. Be sure to save to the particular episode's folder if ripping a DVD with a series of episodes.

The decoding/demuxing process will take anywhere from 5 to 60 minutes. Repeat for each episode, if applicable.

The example ripping folder now contains a "decoded.d2v" file and some .ac3 files.

Go to the Start menu and open (VLC Media Player icon) VLC Media Player. Preview the audio files and delete any that you don't wish to include in the final product.

Close DGIndex and proceed to the next stage.
